Halon Fire Extinguishing System

1. Introduction

1.1 Features of the Halon Fire Extinguishing System

1.1.1 Extinguishing Agent

Halon is an extinguishing agent with excellent property, wide applications and high efficiency. It can extinguish fire rapidly. The ejected extinguishing agent is a clear and clean gas at atmospheric temperature and pressure and will not leave any remains. The system is based on the chemical extinguishing method.

Halon extinguishing agent is a kind of compound which is composed by halogen atoms replacing some or all hydrogen atoms of some low level alkyl compounds. The commonly used halon extinguishing agents are 1211 and 1301.

The halon 1211 extinguishing agent, or difluoro-chlo-bromamethane (the formula is CF2CIBr), is a colourless, low poisonous and insulating gas with a bit of smell. The halon 1301 extinguishing agent, or triflouro-brom-methane (the formula is CF3Br), is a colourless and smell-less gas with much lower poison than 1211.

1.1.2 The Structure of the System

(1) Metal-membrane sealer of the container ensures an excellent air-tight seal and makes permanent storage possible.

(2) Multi-start mode (e.g., electric start, pneumatic start, electric-manual start and jury mechanical-manual start) makes absolutely reliable start assured.

(3) Special electric start device decreases the start current to a lower level, which has resulted in a great reduction in power for the control unit and in volume of the battery and has made the system more compact.

(4) Particular design of the bottle's straight-through valve reduces the flow resistance of halon extinguishing agent to the minimum.

1.2 Application Scope

(1) Halon extinguishing agent can be used to extinguish the A type fire of combustible solids such as paper, wood, fabric, rubber, etc. and the B type fire of all combustible liquids. It can also be used for extinguishing C type fire of combustible gas.

(2) Halon extinguishing agent can be used for extinguishing live electric equipment fire and electric circuit fire.

(3) Halon extinguishing agent can be used for the sites where valuable articles or precious documents exist.

(4) Halon extinguishing agent can be used for the sites where remains cleaning is difficult after other extinguishing agent ejection.

(5) Halon extinguishing agent can be used for the sites where no enough space to store extinguishing agent while fire should be extinguished by limited amount of extinguishing agent.

1.3 Exceptional Cases

(1) Both the chemical matter that can burning rapidly without air supply, such as cellulose nitrate, explosive, nitrogen oxide, fluorine, etc. and the strong oxidants.

(2) The active metal such as potassium, sodium, magnesium, titanium, etc. and their oxidants.

(3) Such chemical matter as peroxide and ammonia that can self-decompose.

(4) Self-combustible matter, such as phosphorus.

2. Technical Parameters of the System

2.1 Charging Pressure

Stationary extinguisher:
1211 1.05 MPa; 2.5 MPa
1301 2.5 MPa; 4.2 MPa

Combined distribution system:
1211 and 1301 2.5 MPa; 4.2 MPa

In general, if the storage unit of extinguishing agent is far from the protection area and the transport pipe is long, it is best to select high storage pressure.

2.2 Charged Density of Extinghuishing Agent

(1) 1211: <= 1470 kg/m3
(2) 1301: <= 1125 kg/m
3

2.3 Ambient Temperature between Storage Bottles

(1) 1211: >= 7 oC
(2) 1301: usually >= -10 oC

2.4 Bottle Capacities

Capacity of extinguishing agent bottles: 40 L; 70 L; 90 L
Capacity of starting gas bottles: 3 L; 20 L
Starting gas: N
2
Working pressure of starting bottle: 10 MPa
Maximum single protection area: 500 m
2
Maximum single protection space: 200 m3

2.5 Start Mode

(1) Electric start: DC 12 V ~ 28.8 V (60 W )
(2) Pneumatic start: gas pressure >= 0.35 MPa
(3) Jury mechanical-manual start: mechanical force < 50 N

2.6 Power Supply

Main power supply: AC 220 V, 50 Hz
Reserve power supply: DC 24 V

2.7 Ejecting Time of Extinghuisher and Start Delay

Start delay: 0 ~ 30 s (adjustable)

Ejecting time of extinguisher
(1) Gas and liquid protection areas: <= 10 s.
(2) Protection areas such as cultural relics room, archives office, precious collections in library, etc.: <= 10 s.
(3) Other protection areas: <= 1 s.

2.8 Mounting Height of Collective Pipes and Select Valve

Mounting height of collective pipes: <= 2400 mm;
Mounting height of select valve: ~ 1500 mm.
